Our Services
Led by Nicole Dow, CPDT-KA, SDC — ethical, welfare-centered support for new and established service dog teams.
Our Service Dog Team Coaching program supports both new and established service dog teams in building the skills, confidence, and partnership needed for success. We work with handlers to develop training plans tailored to their unique needs, whether preparing a candidate dog for service work or refining skills in an existing team.
Each new client begins with a detailed assessment to evaluate your dog's suitability, current skills, and specific task requirements. From there, we create a program that is ethical, science-based, and focused on setting both dog and handler up for long-term success.
Our approach emphasizes public access readiness, task training, emotional well-being, and team communication, ensuring your service dog is prepared, confident, and working within their abilities while maintaining welfare and safety.
"We develop teams where both the dog's work and the handler's needs are equally understood and supported."

A service dog coach is a credentialed professional who supports service dog teams — handlers and their dogs — through the process of developing reliable task behaviours, public access skills, and the working partnership needed for daily life. Nicole Dow (BA, CPDT-KA, SDC) is a certified Service Dog Coach with Cooperative Paws, specializing in team development, task training, and public access preparation in Ontario.
A service dog trainer typically trains the dog independently or prepares dogs for placement. A service dog coach works with the handler-dog team together, developing the partnership, skills, and handler confidence needed for success. Nicole Dow focuses on coaching teams — supporting handlers to communicate effectively with their dogs and develop the skills for public life.
Yes. In Ontario and across Canada, individuals are legally permitted to owner-train their own service dogs. Working with a certified Service Dog Coach like Nicole Dow can significantly improve the process — providing structured guidance, task training support, public access preparation, and handler coaching throughout the journey.
Public access preparation involves training a service dog team to work reliably and safely in real-world environments — stores, transit, healthcare settings, and other public spaces. Nicole Dow coaches teams on behaviour standards, handler skills, environmental exposure, and the specific tasks required for the handler's disability-related needs.
Nicole Dow provides in-person service dog coaching throughout Ontario, including Midland, Barrie, Orillia, Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, and Simcoe County. Virtual coaching is also available for teams across Canada.
The timeline varies significantly based on the dog, the handler's goals, and the specific tasks required. Owner-trained service dog teams typically work with a coach over 12–24 months or longer. Nicole Dow provides ongoing team support throughout the process — from early foundation skills to advanced public access readiness.
Nicole Dow works with a wide range of service dog teams, including those training for physical assistance, psychiatric support, medical alert, and other disability-related tasks. She also supports healthcare professionals and family members involved in service dog team development.

Client Experiences
"I cannot fully explain how happy we are to have met Nicole. She is truly exceptional. Extremely knowledgeable, highly compassionate and so very kind. We rescued a dog and felt somewhat disheartened by the lack of resources for training — fortunately for us we discovered Nicole at Thrive. Her advice has been so helpful. We so look forward to working with her in order to properly train Ivy. You are so appreciated!"
